Portable RadiAnt, or RadiAnt without admin rights: what actually works
RadiAnt is a well-liked Windows DICOM viewer, and one of the most common questions about it is whether it can run from a USB stick on a hospital PC where you have no admin rights. People have been asking that on RadiAnt’s own forum since 2011. This page gives the straight answer, the workarounds people use and where each one breaks, and what to use when you genuinely need a viewer that travels.

The short answer
RadiAnt is not designed to be portable. Its developers said so on their forum in response to the portable-viewer thread, and in 2024 pointed a user asking for a no-install option towards Weasis instead. Unofficial "portable" repackagings exist on download portals, and workaround guides suggest installing to a USB drive or a non-system folder, but all of them still need the installer to run once with sufficient rights on some machine, and none is supported by the vendor.
What RadiAnt’s own forum says
The forum thread titled "Portable RadiAnt viewer" runs from 2011 to 2024. Users ask for a version that runs from a USB drive without installation, typically because hospital IT will not grant admin rights. RadiAnt’s staff reply that the viewer is not meant to be portable, and in the most recent exchange suggest Weasis, a free open-source viewer that does ship a portable archive. RadiAnt does offer a separate CD/DVD autorun package, licensed per recording station, for labs that burn their own discs; that is for distributing studies, not for carrying a viewer.
The workarounds, and where they break
These are the approaches that circulate, with what we found checking them:
| Workaround | What it needs | Where it breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Install RadiAnt to the USB drive on your own PC, then run it elsewhere | Admin rights on the first PC; the installer run once | Application control (AppLocker, SmartScreen) on the target PC may still block an executable from removable media; the licence and settings live in the Windows profile, not on the stick |
| Install to a non-system folder (D:\ or a user folder) so later runs need no elevation | An installer run with rights on that same machine | Only helps on that one machine; it is not portable between PCs |
| Download an unofficial "Portable RadiAnt" from a software portal | Trusting a third-party repackaging of medical software | Not supported or verified by the vendor; version lags; a security team will not whitelist it |
| Ask IT for a one-off install exception | IT goodwill and time, per PC | Does not scale across the ward, the OPD counter and the next hospital you visit |
What "truly portable" means for a DICOM viewer
A viewer is portable when it runs from removable media on a PC it has never seen, with a restricted user account, without an installer, without writing to Program Files or the registry, and without needing internet. Weasis meets that bar for general radiology and is free. PortaDICOM meets it too, and adds the pieces a cardiologist or a travelling clinician needs: a 2 TB SSD that carries the viewer and a searchable library of every case, a decoder for cine XA codecs, calibrated cardiology measurements, and a licence locked to the drive so the hospital knows exactly which device the software lives on.

When RadiAnt is still the right choice
If you work from one PC you control, have admin rights, and want a fast general radiology viewer at a low price, RadiAnt is a good fit and we would not try to talk you out of it. The portable question only matters when the PC is not yours. If that is your week, every week, the answer is a viewer built to travel.
FAQ
Is there an official portable version of RadiAnt?
No. The vendor states on its forum that RadiAnt is not meant to be portable. Repackaged "portable" builds on download sites are unofficial.
Can I run RadiAnt from a USB stick after installing it there?
Sometimes, on PCs whose security policy allows executables from removable media. It is not supported, the licence and settings do not travel reliably, and locked-down hospital PCs often block it.
What free viewer runs without admin rights?
Weasis publishes a portable archive that runs without installation or administrator rights, and RadiAnt’s own staff point users to it. It does not include cardiology QCA tools.
What does PortaDICOM add over a free portable viewer?
Cine XA codecs and playback tuned for cath-lab runs, calibrated cardiology measurements, a 2 TB case library on the same drive, a licence locked to the device, and support from the people who built it.
